What is airbrush/spray tanning?
A trained professional from Waterfalls will spray the special tanning formula onto your body. The amino acids on your skin's surface will respond naturally to the DHA (dihydroxyacetone) and other complementing ingredients in the tanning formula to produce a beautiful sunless tan.
How long should my tan last?
Depends on your skin type, how you maintain the tan, frequency of bathing, exercising, etc..., but generally lasts 7-10 days.
How
long does a tanning session take?
A typical tanning session will take
30 minutes, but can vary.
Once the tanning session is complete,
remember it takes several hours for the color to develop. You will
initially see some color from the bronzer used in the tanning process,
but you won't see your actual results for up to 12 hours.
What do I need to do before my appointment?
1.
Exfoliate your skin the night before. This promotes an even coverage
and lengthens the duration of your tan by removing dead skin that would
otherwise flake off.
2. Shave/wax at least 8 hours before your tanning appointment. 24 hours is preferred.
3.
Avoid wearing make-up and moisturizer as this acts as a barrier to the
spray and stops the process from working properly. Do not wear
deodorant.
4. Wear dark loose fitting clothing and undergarments to
your tanning appointment. The cosmetic bronzer may rub off on clothing,
however it will wash out of most fabrics except for nylons and silks.
Bring a towel to use on your car seat.
5. Style hair in a hairclip
or pony tail so it will be off of face, and neck. Remove all contact
lens and jewelry before being sprayed.
How do I maintain my tan?
1. Wait at least 6-10 hours before washing the tanning formula off.
2.
Apply moisturizer morning and evening after your post-tan shower. Avoid
moisturizers with AHA because they promote exfoliation. Use after tan
products recommended by your technician.
3. Avoid long hot showers and baths, and scrubbing the skin excessively. Pat your skin dry after bathing or showering.
4. Chlorine in swimming pools and hot tubs can remove or shorten the longevity of your tan.
5. Take care when exercising as friction and excess sweat may cause your tan to fade prematurely or unevenly.
If you have any questions please ask your technician. We use AVIVA products which are oil free, fragrance free, alcohol free and paraben free. It is a water based product containing DHA. It was designed for people with hypersensitive skin and is hypoallergenic. AVIVA has not been tested on pregnant women. Waterfalls does not advise pregnant women to use airbrush tanning. We carry AVIVA Winter Glow, AVIVA 8% and AVIVA 10%.

Pre Tan Preparation
1. Shower, exfoliate, and remove body hair 24 to 8 hours before your tanning session.
2. Skin should be clean and dry before being sprayed. Don’t apply moisturizers, deodorants, anti-perspirants, oils or makeup before your tanning appointment. They can effect tan development.
3. Wear dark loose, easily cleaned clothing to appointment. Wear loose shoes. Bring a dark snug swimsuit or under garment to create your “tan line” [wool, lycra, nylon, spandex, silk can all stain]
4. Style hair in a hairclip or pony tail so it will be off of face, and neck Remove all contact lens and jewelry before being sprayed.
5. You will not be able to swim, sweat, bath or exercise for at least 6 to 8 hours – so plan accordingly.
6. Bring a towel to cover leather or light colored seats. If it is raining, bring an umbrella.
After Tan Care
1. Wear dark loose fitting clothing for 6 to 8 hours, while tan develops. Don’t exercise, sweat, swim or bath for 6 to 8 hours.
2. After 6 to 8 hours, shower normally, don’t not use exfoliates or abrasives. Wash with a mild shower gel, preferably moisturizing. Use a mesh shower poof.
3. Some color wash off in the shower is normal; this is excess solution, and color guide tint. You will still have a bronze tan developed in to skin.
Pat, don’t rub skin dry.
4. Apply a moisturizer shower damp skin; you can use an extender lotion, scrub palms after use with bar soap and a nail brush. Moisturize again before bed with a moisturizer of your choice.
5. Apply a moisturizer twice every day. You can apply extender once a day, or every other day.
6. Avoid exfoliating your skin. Be mindful of products that can cause faster fading: bar soaps, alcohol based products such as toners and astringents, products that cause exfoliation such as AHAs, BHAs, Retin-A.

Products and Conditions Affecting Airbrush Tanning
This is a list of commonly used body care products that can have a negative affect on an Airbrush tan. This is not all-inclusive. Not everyone will have a problem with these items. This is only a guide. If you have any questions, please ask your tanning Technician.
Products (may lighten or make a sunless tan blotchy)
· AHA products [Alpha Hydroxy Acids -glycolic, lactic, malic, citric and tartaric acids]
· Anti-acne products that exfoliate, or dry the skin- Accutane, and Salicylic acid, can fade tan. Skin also peels, which can look unacceptable, especially with a tan.
· Antibiotics or other medications that affect your skin, can also affect your tan.
· Anti-aging products that "renew" "refresh" or otherwise exfoliate skin.
· Band-Aid or adhesive tape applied to skin will pull the "tan" off
· Bar soaps, especially deodorant, or antibacterial varieties
· BHA Products [Beta Hydroxy Acids-salicylic acid]
· Body hair bleach products
· Bore type adhesive facial strips, or “peel-off” masks
· Bug spray, perfumes, body sprays when sprayed directly onto skin, can remove or fade the tan. Instead, spray clothing, or spray a "cloud" of spray that you can walk through, instead of directly onto skin.
· Curel Lotion has been identified as a product that altered tans.
· Dove soap, and Dove Shower gel will fade a tan faster, on some people.
· Facial masks and exfoliating scrubs
· Toners containing Alcohols or Witch Hazel in the top three ingredients listed
· Hair Inhibiting Lotions tend to make a sunless tan yellow.
· Makeup remover cleaning products, or oils used to clean away eye makeup
· Wax or Depilatory hair removal products [Nair, Veet, Neet etc]
Conditions (may make a tan fade or not be absorbed as well)
· People with oily skin tend to develop a lighter tan then people with dry skin. The oils can coat the skin; dry skin absorbs more products faster, so can look darker.
· Retin-A type products [Retin-A, Renova, Tazorac, Tretinoin]- all will cause faster fading
· Shaving exfoliates skin, so fades tan. Use a sharp clean razor, with a lubricating product, Hair conditioner works nicely and usually won’t "damage tan". Wash off conditioner when done. A dull razor scrapes off more skin and "tan".
· Submersion in hot tub or swimming pool [an application of a thick waterproof lotion sun block helps-try Bullfrog] Even a long hot bath can all affect the "tan" on some people.
· Sweating feet inside shoes or behind knees and arm bends can fade a tan faster, or make the color guide look greenish or yellowish.
· Use of a loofa, scrub, mitt, etc. for daily washing. [Use a soft washcloth or "soft” poof for daily use]
· If you exercise and sweat heavily your tan can fade faster, especially in body fold areas. (arm bends, knee bends, between breasts etc.)
· In winter, skin is often very dry, and tan will fade faster. Switch to twice daily moisturizer use. CREAM, or butter, just before bed. Butter can also be used
· Hormonal changes [ovulation, menstruation, pregnancy] It may be streaky, patchy, fade worse, or produce lighter or no color.
